Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) involves one’s ability to communicate nonverbally. AAC can involve the use of gestures, pointing, exchange of pictures, and assisted devices. Assisted devices can be classified as low technology AAC (e.g. switch button, picture book) or high technology AAC (e.g. iPads, AAC applications). Both modalities are crucial in giving an individual a voice, allowing them to effectively communicate with others.
Some individuals with AAC have encountered difficulty with communication due to disabilities including, but not limited to:
- Austism Spectrum Disorder
- Cerebral Palsy
- Sensory Impairments
- Genetic Syndromes
- Hearing Impairment
- Stroke
- Head Injury
- Head and Neck Cancer (e.g. total laryngectomies)
- Progressive Neurologic Disease (e.g. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS)
