Aphasia is an acquired language disorder that typically occurs after stroke, brain injury, or infection which makes communicating with others challenging. Aphasia can impair both the production and/or comprehension of speech along with one’s ability to read and write. Common Symptoms of Aphasia:
Verbal Expression
- Trouble naming objects, places, and events that are familiar to you ("tip of the tongue" phenomenon)
- Speaking with increasing effort or tension
- Speaking in single words or short phrases
- Structuring words in wrong grammatical order
- Substituting sounds or words
- Making up nonsense words (e.g. jargon)
Comprehension
- Difficulty with comprehending what others are saying
- Difficulty following speech with fast rate (e.g. television)
- Require additional time to process and comprehend information
- Unable to answer yes/no questions reliably
- Difficulties with understanding figurative language (sarcasm, idioms, etc.)
Reading/Writing
- Difficulty writing and copying letters
- Writing run-on sentences that have incorrect use of grammar
- Substituting incorrect letters or words when writing
- Writing only single words
- Difficulty putting words together to write a sentence
- Difficulty sounding out words
- Difficulty recognizing familiar words
